Since the late 1800's, when residents greeted weary travelers off the train, Cary has
been a place that knows how to make newcomers and long-time residents alike feel at home.
In the past three decades, families and businesses have been choosing Cary as their home
in record numbers. It isn't hard to see why. Cary is in the heart of the Triangle,
adjacent to Research Triangle Park, surrounded by three nationally prestigious
universities and only minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport and the state's
capital. A few hours' drive east takes you to North Carolina's glittering coasts. To the
west are graceful, majestic mountains. We are in an area where the climate is mild and the
seasons defined, from the brilliant, fresh blooms of spring to the glorious shades of
fall.
While great location is something we just happen to have, good planning is something we developed on our own. We know how to grow. Beginning in the late 1960's, Cary has operated under a comprehensive growth plan that is updated annually. That includes everything from roads to utilities to parks, from signs to trees to open spaces. That plan shaped the vision we had of our community. It defined the world-class community we are today. It determined what we didn't lose the hometown feel and closeness of neighborhoods. And it made sure that even as Cary grows by leaps and bounds, newcomer families and businesses always feel welcomed, needed and accommodated.
An annual population growth rate of 10 percent a year, the high profile, quality companies that regularly choose Cary, the national recognitions that continually hail this as a great place to live, all confirm we are on target. Cary stands today as a booming residential center that offers the best of easy, quiet living, a thriving regional retail shopping mecca, and a worldwide hub for transportation and technology.
We've come a long way from the sleeply little village at the turn of the century; The place that boasted one of the best boarding schools on the East Coast, a sole railroad link to the world, and a small gracious hotel. We still have a strong commitment to our educational roots. Today the world is literally at our doorstep. And that small, gracious hotel still stands, a shining reminder to each of us that history is our own to make, one day at a time, even as we keep an eye to the future.
