1998 New And Expanding Industries
ClinTrials
Moving into a new $24 Million clinical research center on Weston Parkway in Cary. It is a
178,000 square foot building located on a 32 acre site. It will be the new operational
headquarters in North and South America.
Cotton Incorporated
Moved its World headquarters to Cary to 125,000 square feet of space located in Weston.
The $15 million project brings with it over 100 jobs to the Cary location.
Dialog Corporation
Will be moving its US Headquarters to 65,000 square feet of office space in Regency Park.
It will be host to 200 employees in the Triangle.
Lucent Technologies
Building two office buildings totaling 270,000 square feet and $30
million in Regency Park on a 29.2 acre tract on the south side of Symphony Lake to
accommodate its growing software development unit.
The Cary Park Hotel
John Q. Hammonds announced plans for a 30,000 to 35,000 square foot
convention center in Cary costing upwards of $25 million. It will be located next to the
Embassy Suites. Plans are to connect the convention center via breezeway to a 200 room, 8
story hotel to be named the Park Hotel.
Price Waterhouse Cooper
Has leased 56,000 square feet at 1200 Crescent Green with about 300 employees and are
looking at expanding its operation by obtaining more space at 1300 Crescent Green.
Association of American Railroads Railinc Division
The Association of American Railroads is moving into 30,000 square
feet on Weston Parkway to create a new home for its Railinc division. This division has
brought between 50 and 100 jobs from its previous Washington D.C. location.
SAS Expansion
Opened a new 300,000 square foot research and development building
at SAS Campus at a $25 million investment. They are in the planning stages for two more
new buildings.
Strategic Technologies
Building a 100,000 square foot facility next to its current
headquarters in Cary. Plans to grow from 100 to 500 employees over the next five years.
Pallet
Moving headquarters into space at 2001 Weston Parkway. The Company
had sales of $24 million last year, up 74 percent.
Highwoods Properties
Contracted to buy 370 acres in Weston to be developed over the next
seven years. Projects finished and underway in Cary include more than 1.5 million square
feet and 520 acres.

- Siemens Medical Training (expansion)
- New Uptime Service Center at MacGregor Park was completed
in spring of 1997. The center operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week with a staff of
120 people.

- Rex Healthcare
- Rex Primary Care and Wellness Center will offer primary
care services including family internal medicine practice, pediatrics, and OB/GYN
services in a 60,000 square foot facility.

- Suiken and Kennedy
- Has located a research and development office in CentreWest
Commons. Suiken and Kennedy is a joint venture between Suiken Technology Company, Ltd. of
Japan and Mr. Harold Kennedy, Jr., P.E. of Eastland, Texas that conducts waterworks
research and development with an emphasis on technology transfer between the US and Japan.

- Brightstone Pharma, Inc.
- Subsidiary of Skypharma Ltd. in the UK, announced that it
will be leasing 30,000 square at MacGregor Business Park. This location will serve their
US Headquarters and will serve the entire US market. The company moved to Cary from
Irvine, California and plans to hire 200 employees by the year 2000.

- Time Warner Cable
- Lichtin Properties will be constructing a 50,000 square
foot with expansion plans to 90,000 square ft. for Time Warner Cable. The warehouse and
distribution facility will have roughly 200 employees and 200 service vehicles.

- 360 Communications (Sprint Cellular)
- Plans to occupy initially 40,000 sq. feet in a newly
constructed 100,000 sq. foot facility in Regency Park. They will be consolidating their
Triangle operations into the new structure and there is potential for them to occupy the
entire 100,000 sq. feet in time.

- Schunck Intec, Inc.
- Plans to build its North American corporate headquarters
(plans call for an ultimate build 108,000 sq. ft. at Kitty Hawk Industrial Park) They will
have office, sales, servicing manufacturing and distribution functions at their location
that will ultimately employ 350.

- Rueben H. Donnelly
- Signed a 10 year lease for 40,000 sq. ft. of office space
at 6000 Aerial Center. Donnelly, a subsidiary of Dun and Bradstreet, will have their
publishing and production of Yellow Pages advertisements. They are closing their facility
in Terre Haute, IN and will hire approx. 230 people.

- Strategic Technologies (expansion)
- Announced the expansion of its existing facility in
MacGregor Business Park. They will now employ approx. 100 people.

- La Quinta Inn Hotel
- Plans to open two hotels with over 300 rooms and employ
roughly 150.

- Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center
- John Q. Hammons Hotels announced and completed the
construction of a 278 room, upscale, suite hotel with a 20,000 sq. ft. Conference Center.
The facility will be located in Harrison Park which is adjacent to Weston.

- The Crescent
- Capital Associates is developing a 138 acre mix use
corporate park located at the intersection of Kildaire Farm Road and Tryon Road, adjacent
to the interchange of US 1 and Hwy. 64 in Cary. It will be the largest commercial real
estate project in the Triangle since 1987 with over 1 million sq. feet of office space and
300,000 sq. feet of retail space.

- Syntel Corporation
- A computer software systems development and integration
company headquartered in Troy, MI had its official grand opening. They have roughly 350
employees.

- GTE Mobilnet/Cellular One
- Expanded its southeast regional headquarters by building a
100,000 sq. foot facility in Weston of which they will occupy 60,000 sq. feet. The
expansion covered the customer care group, engineering, financial services, marketing,
distribution, and new product developments departments.

- Business Communications, Inc.
- Plans to start construction on a 7000 sq. foot facility in
Weston. The company markets telephone systems.
- Oxford University Press
- Had a major facility expansion in CentreWest Industrial
Park. They essentially doubled their size to 200,000 sq. feet.

- Seer Technology
- Expanded its operation and occupies 50,000 sq. feet (three
floors) at 8000 Regency Park. Also, the formerly privately held company announced their
initial public offering.

- Sunox, Inc.
- Announced the construction of a 20,000 sq. foot regional
headquarters building that will have office, warehouse, and distribution functions.

- Parker Lincoln Distribution Center
- Will be a 30,000 sq. foot, multi-tennant office, warehouse,
and distribution facility in Kittty Hawk Industrial Park.

- MSA (Management Systems Associates)
- Announced that they will occupy 56,000 sq. feet in
Crossroads Corporate Park. Highwoods REIT is the developer on the project. They are a
computer consulting company.

- Sunshares Recycling
- Announced the construction of a 10,000 sq. foot facility in
Weatherstone Industrial Center. The site is located near the Cary Public Works facility.

- Clare Bridge
- A $2.4 million assisted-living facility opened in Cary in
1997. This facility will provides a quality facility to growing market for an alternative
to nursing homes. There are 22 Clare Bridge facilities across the country.

- InSite Clinical Trials
- Has relocated its national headquarters from Atlanta to
Cary. InSite handles the recruiting patients and lining up study sites for clinical
research organizations. The company has leased a 7,000-square-foot office in Cary and has
hired 50 new employees.

- R. R. Donnelly
- Constructed a 108,000 sq. foot facility in Woodlake
Industrial Park. They are a subsidiary of Stream International in Boston. They will be
manufacturing, packaging, and distributing computer software.

- Nortel Distribution Center
- Is a 350,000 sq. foot warehouse and distribution facility
located at the Woodlake Industrial Park.

- The Rothchild Group
- Announced plans to build a 45,300 sq. foot, speculative,
Class A office space on Weston Parkway. It will be a two-story, high end office building
on approx. a 4 acre site.

- First Oakland Properties
- Has announced a 45,000 sq. foot speculative, Class A office
building in the Weston PUD.

- MCI
- Announced a major expansion with a purchase of an
additional 30 acres in Weston, adjacent to their existing facility. Over time, they will
be constructing an additional 460,000 sq. foot plus a 1,900 car parking garage. The
ultimate employee total is estimated at 3000.

- Train Depot
- Downtown Development Committee in conjunction with the Town
of Cary and the State DOT announced the construction of a train depot and DMV driver's
license office across from the Chamber building.

- Amonic Research Group
- They constructed a 30,000 sq. foot facility in MacGregor
Business Park.

- Fidelity Bank
- Completed construction on a two-story bank building in
downtown Cary. It will change the face of downtown forever.

- NationsBank
- Opened a new branch in West Cary at the Cornerstone
Development.

- VanKel Industries, Inc.
- A New Jersey company that produces testing equipment for
the pharmaceutical industry will relocate its headquarters in a 30,000 square foot
facility at Weston Industrial Park, creating 60 new jobs.

- FAC Realty Trust Inc.
- A real estate investment trust that owns and manages
factory outlet stores, is moving its headquarters from Smithfield to Cary. The company has
leased 18,000 square feet of office space in Cary and has 93 employees.

- Hannafords
- Hannafords A full service food market located on High House
Road in Preston Corners.

- M.A.I.D.
- Moved its U.S. headquarters from New York city to Cary in
November. The London-based provider of online business information moved to a 30,000
square foot space in Regency Park and will employ 150-175 form the local labor force.

- FAC Realty (Factory Stores)
- Opened in Regency Park with an additional 50 employees.

- Clin Trials
- A "big three" contract research organization
plans to expand operations in a move to Cary's Weston PUD. The expansion includes 360 new
jobs and is the largest of its seven worldwide locations.

- Holiday Inn Express
- Opens at Regency Park with over 150 rooms

- The Arboretum (retail and commercial)
- Over 30 million investment at Gateway to Cary.

- SAS
- New 300,000 square foot research and development building
at SAS Campus at a 25 million investment.

- Cadence Design Systems Inc.
- A company that makes software used to design semiconductor
chips and printed circuit boards, is opening a 9,500 square-foot research and development
office in Cary that will employ 45 software engineers.

- Furuno Diagnostics America Inc.
- A company which makes medical equipment, is moving its
headquarters from Durham to 18,000 square feet of space in Cary. The company is investing
close to $6 million to get up-and-running and will add 10 new employees.

- The Liofol Co.
- A developer and manufacturer of glue-like adhesives used to
make flexible packaging; moved into a new 13,000 square foot headquarters in Cary. The new
facility was a $1.5 million investment for the company.

- Tangram Enterprise Solutions
- A small technology company, is doubling its size by hiring
100 new employees and leasing 50,000 square feet of office space in Cary. The expansion is
a result of a new software program called Asset Insight.
